Training

Learn to love your puppy while you train!  Once the newness of a puppy wears off and bad and unwanted behaviors emerge, owners are eager for help.

Puppies have a short attention span than mature dogs, which can make an ordinary Basic Obedience class difficult for them.  At the same time, puppies are highly receptive to learning new things and forming good habits that can last a lifetime.  Socializing the puppy with other dogs and new people builds their confidence and teaches them how to behave appropriately in new situations.

My puppy basic class will introduce appropriate behavior for every day life that will include sit, down, stay, release, focus, no/leave it, and leash introduction.  I will also assist with other behavioral problems that you may be having at home such as biting, crate training etc.

I recommend that everyone within the home is included in these training sessions so that everyone remains on the same pages.

Assigned homework is included.

Problems with your dog at home???  Any house manners that needs to be corrected? Are you new to having a puppy and need assistance with house training? Is your puppy still having accidents in the home?  Do you have boundaries set for your puppy/dog?

Scheduled session lasts about 1.5hrs.

Consultation helps me learn more about your puppy’s/dog's behavior. We will schedule a time that is convenient for you and your family for me to meet with you in your home to carry out an in-depth behavior assessment. During this session I will observe your dogs behavior; not only how your dog is interacting with you, but also how you and your family interacts with your dog. A full behavior history and behavior challenges will be gathered as well as together coming up with training goals to address the behaviors you specifically wish to challenge. Your input is important so I encourage all family members to be a part of this process to ensure all needs are being met.

After the initial visit, if interested, I will create a plan that will target those areas that we discussed and schedule 1hr weekly meetings to go over specific training methods for those targeted areas. Discounted hourly rate.

Packet runs for 4 weeks depending on the progress.

Basic Obedience is appropriate for anyone who wants to train their dog, of any age.  Obedience training should be a fun and enjoyable experience for both the dog and the owner.  Training your dog helps set up the relationship, bond, trust and establishes you as the “Pack Leader”.

I will demonstrate a broad range of training techniques teaching handlers how to correctly reward your dog while teaching them more advanced levels of obedience than normally seen in your typical basic obedience class. Handlers will also learn how to communicate through a reward based system.  Learn how to gain your dog's cooperation through clear communication, praise and corrections.

During the 4 week program, clients will notice a dramatic difference in their dogs performance. I recommend that everyone within the home is included in these training sessions so that everyone remains on the same pages.

The basic obedience program teaches the dog foundation behaviors: Walk-nicely-on-leash ("Heel"), Sit, Down, Stand, Stay, Recall ("Come"), No/Leave It, Turns and Pace Changes (Fast & Slow)

Assigned homework is included.

One-on-One Basic Obedience (6 months and older)
You must have completed my basic obedience program first before moving onto intermediate.

This advance class for dogs/handlers that have mastered the basic obedience commands and exercises of heeling on lead including figure eight, sit and down stay and recall.  The class will reinforce the basic commands by introducing distractions (proofing) to the exercises, and will incorporate new exercises and commands to being off lead control from a distance.

New exercises and commands added to basic obedience include: sit and down stay with distractions (e.g. unusual/sudden noise, objects on floor, movement), recall with distractions (off lead), heeling with distractions (on and off lead), sit, stand and down-in-motion (handler places dog in position and continues walking, dog stays in place).

One-on-One Intermediate
Groups must include 5 or more handlers. Dogs must range 6mths-older.

Looking for a group class at a discounted rate?  Do you know anyone who has a dog and would join you to take the class?
What's so great about participating in a group class, you ask?

As your dog is learning basic commands they will begin to learn calmness and focus, even around people and other dogs.  Most dogs lack self-control because they have never been encouraged to learn it.  Obedience training develops a dog's self-control so they are calm enough to focus on their owners and learn new desirable behaviors.

Another benefit to obedience class is socializing your dog in a controlled environment.  A well-socialized dog will be comfortable and relaxed around other dogs. The class establishes communication and teamwork between dog and handler as students master six exercises:

                        * Heeling on leash with sits, turns and pace changes
                        * Heeling through and around obstacles (figure eight)
                        * Stand Stay
                        * Sit Stay
                        * Down Stay
                        * Recall (come)
                        * Return to heel position

Owners quickly find how useful and rewarding training becomes and how each of these exercises is used in daily life: heeling closely down a busy street, standing for the vet and/or groomer, lying down quietly while the family eats dinner, sitting politely by the door when guests arrive, and most importantly, coming when called.  Not only does daily life become easier through the use of the commands, but more importantly, owners find the challenge of teamwork has exponentially increased their bond with their dog. By graduation, owners are deeply proud of their accomplishment and their dog.

This 5-week session begins with an orientation lecture (1st day of class) and ends with a graduation where each dog-and-handler team demonstrates their accomplishments.
I recommend that everyone within the home is included in these training sessions so that everyone remains on the same pages.

Assigned homework is included.
