Here I Am
At eight weeks old, here I am, an American Pit Bull Terrier.
You take me in to be a part of your family and part of your life
You begin to raise me to be smart, protective, a companion and a reliable friend.
I have learned that there are those who cannot stand the sight of me
Some fear me, some may find me friendly and some would like to see my breed end.
For what reason I am not sure why
All I ever wanted was to have a family of my own, a place to call home.
Yes, I may do dumb things and may not come immediately when called,
But my feelings for you will never change.
When you leave me alone for a few hours to go to work, it affects my character
I wonder if you will return or will you stay away.
Depression sets in coupled with loneliness and boredom, so I kept myself entertained.
You return to find your slippers torn, sheets ripped and trash all over the floor.
With my ears down and tail tucked between my legs, you knew I did something wrong.
But it was done only because I missed you so very much.
With anger and frustration in your eyes, you knelt down, gave me a hug and told me you loved me.
The years went by so fast that I hardly had time to breathe
I recall us playing catch, taking long walks or just lounging around in the house.
You comforted me when I was sick and I tried to do the same for you.
As the days get shorter and nights get longer
You can look into my eyes and tell that I am getting older
I only have one enemy…time.
Soon it will be time to let me go,
But you gave me what I always wanted a life of happiness, friendship and a family of my own.
I thank you for your loyalty to me and to my breed and I hope my loyalty to you has been just as strong.
With one last lick on your cheek, I lay my head down to rest.
Take care old friend, we will meet again.
When time is at its best.
